## The evidence

Sexual communication is one of the most reliably measured predictors of sexual and relationship satisfaction. Mallory et al. (2019, *Journal of Family Psychology*), meta-analysing 93 studies with over 38,000 participants, found a significant positive association between sexual communication and both sexual satisfaction (r ≈ 0.35) and relationship satisfaction (r ≈ 0.37), and stronger associations for sexual communication specifically than for general communication.

The common belief that talking about sex ruins spontaneity is not supported. The pattern in the data runs the other way.

## Why it is hard

Most people receive no model for it. Sex education covers risk; almost none covers pleasure, preference or negotiation. Add fear of hurting a partner, fear of seeming inexperienced or too experienced, shame carried from upbringing, and the belief that a good partner should intuit what you want, and the result is two people guessing.

The consequence appears clearly in the orgasm gap data: encounters with the highest orgasm rates are those involving the behaviours people would have asked for if asking were easy.

## When to talk

**Outside the bedroom** for anything substantial: desire mismatch, a new interest, something that is not working, sexual health agreements, or a boundary. Neutral setting, clothed, not immediately before or after sex, and not during an argument.

**During** for small adjustments: "harder", "slower", "there", "wait". Short, specific, low-stakes.

**Afterwards** for what worked: "I loved when you…". Positive feedback shapes behaviour more effectively than criticism and is far easier to hear.

## How to raise something that is not working

Lead with what you want rather than what is wrong.

- Instead of "you never go down on me": "I love it when you go down on me — can we do that more?"
- Instead of "you're too rough": "I want it slower at the start, then you can build."
- Instead of "you always finish first": "Can we do a bit more with your hands before we start?"

Use "I" statements, be specific, pick one thing rather than a list, and choose a moment with time to talk afterwards.

## Receiving feedback

This is the harder half, and it determines whether your partner ever tells you anything again.

- Listen without defending.
- Do not apologise at length — it makes them manage your feelings and teaches them not to raise things.
- "Thanks for telling me" is a complete response.
- Ask a clarifying question: "Show me?" is often better than more discussion.
- Do not treat feedback about a technique as a verdict on you.

## Tools

- **Yes / no / maybe lists** filled in separately, then compared. Removes on-the-spot pressure and surfaces things neither would have mentioned.
- **Traffic lights** during: green, amber, red.
- **A regular relationship check-in** — a scheduled, low-stakes conversation that includes intimacy alongside everything else, so raising something does not require an occasion.
- **Show rather than tell.** Guide a hand, demonstrate on yourself, adjust position.
- **Text or write it** if speaking is too hard. A written message is a legitimate way to raise something difficult.

## Talking about sexual health

Direct, matter-of-fact, and before rather than during.

- "I was last tested on [date], and it covered [infections and sites]. What about you?"
- "I use condoms with new partners. Is that OK with you?"
- "I'm on PrEP."
- "I have herpes. It's managed with medication, and here's what that means for us."

A partner who reacts to any of these with hostility or pressure has given you useful information early.

## Talking about a fantasy

Start with a low-stakes disclosure and watch the response. Frame it as something you are curious about rather than something you require. Accept a no gracefully and without returning to it repeatedly. A fantasy is not a demand, and a partner declining to enact one is not rejecting you.

## When it is stuck

Recurring arguments about sex, complete avoidance of the topic, or a pattern where every attempt escalates all indicate the conversation needs a third party. Sex therapy is short-term for many couples, specifically trained for this, and effective. Directories: COSRT in the UK, AASECT in the US.
